Aston Martin releases ultimate home racing chair

Aston Martin has unveiled a racing chair designed to be “the ultimate in luxury eSport experiences." It's limited to just 150, although these things tend to be ‘limited’ to roughly the number of units that they expect to sell. Given it costs £58,000 plus tax (making it around £70,000 in the UK) that seems about right.

The opening quote tells you everything about why Aston Martin has made this thing. It’s a response to the surge in motor racing eSports sessions as a result of the COVID-19 crisis, with casual gamers and professional racing stars alike getting involved. Aston Martin launched its own single-make virtual race series in July, as did Lamborghini.

The chair, called the AMR-C01, was designed by Aston and built by British company Curv Racing Simulators and comes with a copy of Assetto Corsa pre-installed – the platform that both Aston Martin and Lamborghini use to host their eSports series. We expect that you’ll be able to hook a PlayStation or Xbox to it and play whatever racer you like, though.

It’s staggeringly over-engineered. The seating position is exactly the same as the Aston Martin Valkyrie’s – that’s the £3,000,000 race car for the road, also limited to 150 units – and it’s built mostly from lightweight carbon fibre. That’s presumably to prevent it leaving too deep a dent in the Ikea rug after it’s moved.

We’re not told much technical detail on the system – like, we don’t even know the size and resolution of that amazing curved screen – but we guess it’s 4K resolution with High Dynamic Range.

Curv Racing Simulators itself has a link to Aston Martin by way of its boss, Aston Martin works driver Darren Turner, whose particular specialism is using and building Formula 1 simulators. He said: “The AMR-C01 is all about the love of racing. We’ve created a home simulator with incredible immersion that offers users the opportunity to have a great time racing in the virtual world, from the comfort of their own home. Our goal was to create a simulator that provided as much enjoyment in virtual reality as real racing does. Racing cars is a lot of fun and it is great to see that with the growth of Esports racing, more people are now getting involved.”

We’ve requested a brochure. We’ll let you know more once it arrives.
