Fast estates are some of the most complete cars on sale. Powerful yet practical, they seem to have it all. Here are our top 10 best.

What would be the ultimate car? A machine that did everything so well that it would be the only four-wheeled companion you’d ever need.

If only you could combine the performance of a serious supercar with the practicality of a family car – something that allows you to do 200mph with the dog in the boot. If you yearn for such perfection, the super estate car has answered your prayers.

Here are 10 of the fastest accelerating estate cars by their 0-62mph (or 100km/h) sprint times.

10. Audi RS4 Avant: 4.1 seconds

Powered by a turbocharged 2.9-litre V6 engine, the Audi RS4 Avant is a potent autobahn assassin. 0-62mph takes just 4.2 seconds, while a top speed of 174mph is possible if you tick the right option boxes. This is the sort of car that can drop the kids to school, the dog to the groomer, and you to work in the blink of an eye.

9. Mercedes-AMG C63 S Estate: 4.1 seconds

The Mercedes-AMG C63 S Estate might be a bit of a mouthful to name, but some time behind the wheel of this beastly load-lugger will mean you never forget it. Under the bonnet is AMG’s mighty twin-turbocharged 4.0-litre V8 engine producing 503bhp. It’s then channelled to all four wheels via a nine-speed automatic transmission, making this estate good for 0-62mph in just 4.1 seconds

This elongated muscle car also sounds incredible!

8. Mercedes-AMG CLA45 S: 4.0 seconds

The C-Class is beaten to the punch by its smaller CLA AMG sibling. Ok, so technically speaking this is a shooting brake, but it’s a practical family estate car in most people’s eyes – sloping roofline or not. 415bhp and 367lb ft of torque is enough to rocket this Merc from 0-62mph in 4 seconds. Not bad for a turbocharged 2.0-litre engine!

It’s not the biggest estate car, but it’s certainly one of the fastest.

7. Alpina B3 Touring: 3.9 seconds

Taking the well-rounded package that is the BMW 3 Series Touring and cranking up the performance is something we can fully support. This sort of tinkering is Alpina’s speciality and the B3 Turbo Touring in its latest generation will race from 0-62mph in 3.9 seconds, and do 0-124mph in 13.9 seconds.

This impressive wagon is only upstaged by its bigger brother...

6. Alpina B5 Touring: 3.7 seconds

For those still mourning the loss of BMW’s M5 Touring, tuner Alpina might just have a solution for you. Packing an enormous load volume of 1,700-litres, the B5 Bi-Turbo Touring will get your Ikea furniture from 0-62mph in 3.7 seconds.

Alpina’s reputation for tuning BMWs stretches back decades and its latest B5 highlights that it hasn’t lost its touch.

5. Audi RS6 Avant: 3.6 seconds

What a handsome brute! This chiselled piece of practical performance might not have the V10 engine of old, but its turbocharged 4.0-litre V8 packs a more potent punch than ever. 591bhp is optimised by an advanced Quattro all-wheel drive system to enable 0-62mph in a staggering 3.6 seconds.

Practical, good looking, seriously fast, and with the best interior in its class – the RS6 is one of our favourites on this list.

4. Mercedes-AMG E63 S: 3.5 seconds

If you love the C63 Estate recipe and decide that you want more of the same, check out the E63 S. This AMG estate possesses the same hot-V V8 engine, but now producing 603bhp. Its thunderous soundtrack is sure to put a grin on your face, as will its 0-62mph time of 3.5 seconds.

All of this performance can be yours along with 640-litres of boot space. Talk about having your cake and eating it, too.

3. ABT Audi RS6-R: 3.2 seconds

If you thought the regular RS6 was something to behold, take a look at the menacing RS6-R from tuner ABT. Audi’s twin-turbocharged 4.0-litre engine is now producing 730bhp and 679lb ft of torque. Its new 0-62mph time of 3.2 seconds equals that of a Pagani Hauyra!

Its menacing looks match its supercar slaying performance.

2. Porsche Panamera Turbo S Sport Turismo: 3.1 seconds

The first Porsche estate goes just like a Porsche should. The German firm is one of the best around at simply putting down power to the road in the most efficient manner possible. A such, this hefty barge will propel itself to 62mph in just 3.1 seconds using launch control. It'll also out handle much smaller competition.

1. Brabus 850 E63 AMG: 3.1 seconds

Brabus are the Alpina of the Mercedes-Benz world, but in this instance, its BMW rival has no answer to this wickedly fast estate car. The modified E63 is equipped with performance that is usually reserved for lightweight two-seat supercars, but the German tuner appears to have defied physics with the 850.

838bhp and 848lb ft of torque has been unlocked from the turbocharged V8 engine to gift owners of this car a record 0-62mph dash of 3.1 seconds.
